Giant Sunflowers get planted out at The Forest School

| On what must have been one of the hottest days of the summer, Year 9 students at The Forest School in Knaresborough spent the afternoon recently planting out the school’s sunflower plants. These had been planted from seed back in April and now have put on an impressive spurt of growth. Science teacher Mr Patrick Organ commented, “We are running a sponsored sunflower grow to raise funds for the school and I am surprised how much these plants have grown already”. The plants have been planted up against a fence for support and shelter and hopefully they will continue to grow throughout the summer and achieve an impressive height by the end of term. |

Knaresborough
in Bloom volunteers recently spent a very enjoyable afternoon at The Forest
School in Knaresborough. The volunteers were helping the children from
the school to plant sunflower seeds as part of the Grow a Giant Sunflower
competition. Chair of Knaresborough in Bloom, Christine Willoughby explains “We asked all the schools in Knaresborough to publicise our Grow a Giant Sunflower competition and to invite children to attend our sunflower planting event which was held in the Easter school holidays. The Forest school contacted us and asked if we could attend the school and help the children to plant their seeds. We were very happy to do this”. Penny Carpenter, KIB’s schools’ co-ordinator added “Just about every child at The Forest planted their own sunflower seeds into compost and they are now caring for their seeds at the school. We hope that their seeds grow really well and that we will be back in June to see which seed has grown the highest” |
